Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has named Younes Kaboul as the new Spurs captain with Hugo Lloris and Emmanuel Adebayor as vice-captains.

It had been widely believed that current France captain Hugo Lloris or Kaboul's fellow centreback Jan Vertonghen would be given the armband.

But Kaboul has worn the captain's armband in his five starts so far this season and will now take over the role following the departure of Michael Dawson this summer.

The French defender is one of the club's longest-serving players having initially joined from Auxerre in July, 2007. He spent 18 months at Portsmouth before moving back to White Hart Lane in January, 2010 and has now made 130 appearances for the club.

Pochettino told the club's website: "Younes has shown me all the values needed to be a captain. He has the character to lead this team as well as the respect of his teammates. Hugo and Ade will be vice-captains and both of them, along with Younes, possess tremendous experience and have all shown a great attitude and leadership."

Kaboul added: "I am delighted to have been given this responsibility. To follow in the footsteps of some of the legendary captains that have represented this football club is a fantastic honour. It is a great achievement for me on a personal level and I hope to help lead this team to great things in the future."
