Have a say on future of marshes

HARINGEY residents are being encouraged to have a say in the future of Tottenham Marshes.

Plans will be drawn up for the public use of the marshes from a consultation commissioned by Lea Valley Park, British Waterways and Haringey Council.

The partnership has been awarded funds from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister's Green Space Fund, which supports initiatives to improve public access, usage and a sense of ownership of open spaces.

Northumberland Park ward councillor John Bevan is eager for residents to be made aware of the potential of the marshes and to participate in the consultation exercise.

"Tottenham Marshes are a restful and relaxing area and they are literally on the doorstep of Tottenham residents," he said.

"People should really be made aware of what a great place it is. However, it is clear that a lot needs doing to really unlock their potential and make the marshes known to the residents of Tottenham."

Cllr Bevan has suggested improved lighting and footpaths, for a start, along with cycle paths, litter bins and public toilet facilities.

"Another way of bringing more people to the area would be to utilise the site of the old public house adjacent to Stonebridge Lock," he suggested.

"This is now closed and boarded up, but when it operated successfully, and because it was adjacent to the canal, it brought many people to the area.

"Perhaps the public house could be reopened or renovated, with the condition attached that the toilets are available to be used by all users of the marshes."

As a first stage in the consultation process, three estate-based workshops are to be held in the borough in mid-September.
