Reporter Elizabeth Pears offers a behind-the-scenes perspective on the week's news

The England job

By Caron Kemp »

My husband has just been made manager of England (football club).

It took what seemed like a million hours staring at his laptop watching "matches" unfold and two sackings but he proudly told me of his promotion last night.

Am I meant to be impressed? Is it only me that fails to see the point of the Football Manager game on the PC? Don't get me wrong, I love football, but seeing dots move around a screen which is in some way calculated by a computer system is not my idea of fun.

What I find less fun about this meaningless hobby is the fact that it has taken over my life before my very eyes. Being a footballer's wife does have its perks I guess but in this setting I am not so keen.

I even asked him what was more important, his career or his family. he did tell me his family was more important but worryingly we both understood his "career" to mean the England job rather than his real life one.

I know there is controversy around the use of computer games, especially violent ones that can potentially influence children in the wrong way and teach harmful skills.

Well I think I might have stumbled across the most mind-numbing game ever, and I think that is quite dangerous.
