Miracle babies?

By Caron Kemp »

I can’t help feeling sorry for the couple who claim to have received a miracle baby. See full story here.

Blinded by a burning desire to be parents and by misguided faith they’ve got themselves into quite a pickle.

Some of the facts are clear. The baby, C, is not biologically theirs. My science brain would therefore conclude that they did not conceive this kid. Plus a judge has ruled that C was trafficked from Kenya in October 2003.

But then you add religion into the equation and things start getting more murky. I’ll put to one side for a moment my thoughts on Deya’s brand of faith because I am not sure it’s one I wholly buy into, but this is why I feel sorry for Mr and Mrs E.

What happens when you cross an inherent wish to have children, an inability to have them and a man saying he can talk to God who’ll bring them one?

(This isn’t a joke by the way).

Answer: a whole heap of trouble.

As important as faith is it worries me that it can also blind people to a reality that others see. But with faith, the burden of proof lies with the disbeliever and it is an impossible task. If someone has faith no amount of DNA, law or judges rulings are going to discount the fact that this couple believe this baby is theirs from God.

Either that or they’re hiding behind the religion argument, but I want to believe this isn’t the case.

It remains to be seen what will happen on Monday but on the basis that the facts are stacked against them, I hope Mr and Mrs E’s faith guides them to a more tried and tested method of starting a family.
