Reporter Elizabeth Pears offers a behind-the-scenes perspective on the week's news |
8:56am Monday 2nd July 2007
So the smoking ban is finally upon us.
Now we can all breathe a (clean) sigh of relief that we don’t have to endure other people’s bad habits.
I don’t mean to sound high and mighty about it but this was long overdue.
More than saving our lungs, I hope this new legislation brings home the point that smoking is NOT cool. Because let’s face it, that’s why most teenagers take up the habit, and often why
others feel pressurised to try it.
Attitudes towards smoking have changed dramatically in the last few decades but still too many young people are doing it.
I did hear that one chain of pubs are installing hand-held games consoles to keep smokers hands busy, and beer mats saying ‘I have gone for a cigarette’ - or something to that effect - so
their drinks aren’t taken away while they’re outside.
Anything to keep the punters coming in eh...
