Air conditioning

By Caron Kemp »

Air conditioning is the bain of my life.

The amount of time we spend in the newsroom discussing whether to turn it on/ off or how many people are cold/ hot or whether it is better/ worse to have the windows open is astonishing.

I might side with the people who vote to keep the air con off but it is with good reason.

I think my dislike in part stems from the fact that I am always cold. If my coat is off during the day it’s like our own personal temperature gauge. It must be roasting, apparently.

But having a hole in the wall capable of turning any room into a freezer is not my idea of fun. I don’t see any pleasure in used, fake air swirling round the office to the point that we can see our breath.

Plus this ugly air harbours all the bacteria and germs that have been lying dorment for years. (Ok this might not be backed up by science and might be exaggerated a tiny bit, but you get my point.)

Lots of people hate flying because the air is horrible and it makes the smell of disgusting plane food linger like, well, a bad smell. It’s because of air conditioning. Does no one see the connection??? Yet more proof that air conditioning is widely disliked.

And to add further to my dislike for air con is the fact that when I recently went hunting for a new car, they wanting to charge an extra £1,000 for the privilege of having it installed.

What happened to fresh air? can’t we just open a window, let a nice breeze waltz in and banish the air con for good?

Ok rant over, but my feeling is this is a much bigger issue than the media has so far given it credit for! What do you think?
