Reporter Elizabeth Pears offers a behind-the-scenes perspective on the week's news |
9:01am Friday 6th July 2007
Does anyone else not ‘get’ Wimbledon?
I don’t mean not understanding the rules, although to be honest I am better with football, but I mean not understand the hype.
Tennis is ok, I suppose, but I can’t help not getting caught up in all the fuss.
No one talks about tennis during the rest of the year. No other competitions give rise to discussions in any proportion comparable to this one. Suddenly people young and old come out of the woodwork
in support of this frankly boring sport to cheer on people I’ve never heard of.
If all these people are so interested in tennis, enough to warrant its immense coverage on tv, what happens the rest of the year? Do these people go into hibernation, saving up all their enthusiasm
for a two-week period?
And all it ever does is rain. Miserable. Just miserable. I mean the strawberries are good but we don’t need a tennis match to tuck into them.
Plus this country is rubbish at tennis anyway.
When does the football season start again?
