A Haringey Monopoly?

By Caron Kemp »

Toy maker Hasbro will release its latest version of Monopoly for general sale on Tuesday.

After creating numerous offshoot versions of the ever-popular board game including a Simpsons and Chelsea option (both of which I admit to owning) Hasbro has now created a UK edition.

Now instead of vying for the glory of Mayfair and Park Lane you’ll be purchasing the slightly less glamorous St Albans and Exeter. (I don’t see the connection either but let’s run with it for a moment).

Cheap street Old Kent Road is replaced by Liverpool and the classic Whitechapel is now Leeds.

And the new version, called Here and Now UK, will need to provide a lot more of that infamous paper money, as a more realistic price tag has been set on the properties. For example, St Albans will set you back a cool £4 million. A slight increase on the old-style game where Mayfair represented the most expensive area with a price tag of £400.

So this got me thinking. Correct me if I am wrong but I don’t think Hasbro has yet decided to venture into the idea of making a Haringey edition. But more fool them because I think it would make for a really interesting picture of what life is like in the borough.

What would Mayfair and Park Lane be now? Muswell Hill and Highgate? Surely the cost of properties would give St Albans a run for its money.

You could be sent to jail but there’s not an excess of cells in the borough so make sure you stagger your visits.

Instead of choosing an iron, hat or car counter there could be a little metal Meehan, Haley and Featherstone.

But you’d only be able to play between the hours of 6.30pm and 8am when controlled playing zones are not in place.

And Free Parking would have to go. It simply doesn’t exist in Haringey.

So what do you think? Should we rally together the residents of Haringey and pile the pressure on Hasbro to put the borough on the Monopoly map?
