Reporter Elizabeth Pears offers a behind-the-scenes perspective on the week's news |
9:08am Friday 19th October 2007
Breaking news: fast food is bad for you. After testing the key players in quick meal solutions it was discovered that the food contains obscene levels of salt.
McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Burger King and KFC were up there among the junk food cuplrits revealed today.
Forgive me for sounding slightly under-alarmed by this revelation but I assumed it was common knowledge that a Big Mac and fries wouldn't be on a Weight Watchers diet plan.
Ok so now we might know the specifics; that most of these meal deals contain more than the reccommended daily amount of salt, but I'd like to know how much the researchers got paid to find out these
pearls of wisdom.
Note: the research was carried out by lobby group Consensus Action on Salt and Health, acronym CASH. Says it all really no?
Don't get me wrong, it is important that these fast food chains take serious action to make their food healthier or risk losing out in the long term to healthy eating pressures.
Perhaps McDonalds should spend less time rebranding their shop in Tottenham to a controverial knaki green and spend the funds on food Gillian McKeith would be proud of.
