The parents of a 23-year-old man, who died following a disturbance in Prestwich early on Saturday morning, have paid tribute to their son.

David Lees from Blackley died after being knocked down by a car on Middleton Road shortly before 1am.

Today, his parents Don, aged 48, and Ann Lees, 47, said: "David was a big football fan. He supported Manchester United and played for the local Alliance pub football team.

"He'd booked to go to New York in January next year with Brooke, his girlfriend (aged 21) of three and a half years. She, like us, is absolutely devastated by his loss.

"It has been an extremely difficult time for us as a family as we've not even had time to come to terms with the loss of our youngest son, Paul, who died unexpectedly at the age of 19, following an illness.

"David was one of the best sons anybody could have wished for. He was very popular with his family and his friends and he'll be sadly missed by all."

David lived at home with his parents and worked locally as a self-employed brick cleaner. He has a brother, John, 26, and sister, Donna, 29 and was also an uncle to Donna's two young children.

Detectives are continuing to appeal for information about the incident.

Officers were called to a disturbance on Middleton Road at the BP garage forecourt shortly before 1am.

During the disturbance, David was knocked down by a car on the road in front of the garage. The driver of the car failed to stop at the scene and drove away.

David was taken to the North Manchester General Hospital where he died a short time later.

A post mortem examination revealed that David died as a result of severe head injuries.

Detectives are continuing their investigations to trace the driver and the type of the car involved in the incident, and are asking anyone who sees a car with substantial front and windscreen damage to contact them immediately.

A 25-year-old man, who was arrested on Saturday afternoon on suspicion of murder, continues to be questioned.

A second man, aged 27, has also been arrested in connection with the incident and is also being questioned.

Police are appealing for anyone who has any further information about the incident or who sees a car with the damage described to contact the Major Incident Room at Chadderton on 0161 856 2467 or 856 2441. Information can also be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
