NEWS SHOPPER'S support for the 2012 Olympic bid has been welcomed by the group behind plans to bring the games to London.

London 2012's chief operating officer Mike Power made the comments after meeting with Greenwich officials to discuss how the borough will benefit from the games.

At the meeting he outlined its plans for the borough to council officers and members of the World Heritage Site executive, which oversees the park and nearby area.

Greenwich Park is to hold equestrian events including cross country and show jumping.

The Dome will feature trampolining, gymnastics, basketball and handball and two 6,000-seat temporary sports halls will be built nearby to host badminton, gymnastics and table tennis.

Keen on Greenwich's place in the bid, Mr Power said: "London is a wonderful city for iconic structures such as Lords and Greenwich Park, so it makes no sense to build new venues when we've got places such as this."

He also reassured park users, although the park will need some alteration to host the equestrian section of the games, it will be returned to its current state afterwards.

Councillor Vicky Morse, who represents Greenwich Council on the world heritage partnership, said: "The bid offers a tremendous opportunity to boost regeneration."

Mr Powers welcomed News Shopper's support, saying: "The more media support we get the better and News Shopper is helping with that."
