LAST week I said I'd get the result of the bungee jump's antics at the Pheasant Pub in Amersham on Sunday, June 24. Well, apparently 20 people jumped and raised £50 each to help 16 Amersham Venture Scouts build a fence for a new orphanage in Romania. That should make them jump again with joy! Well done everyone.

FAMILY and friends of a special little girl in Chesham Bois are doing a sponsored slim to try to raise £4,000 to be used to install a sensory room for three-year-old Alanya Tanner who has been disabled since birth.

Alanya's right eye was opaque when she was born, then her parents realised that she might be blind. Their fears were confirmed when they saw an eye specialist. Paediatrics at Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital later diagnosed severe reflux. When she was six months old Alanya was fitted with a tube inside her stomach, through which she feeds five times a day.

Alanya also has severe curvature of the spine and is unable to sit up, but because she would outgrow any surgery to correct it and would have to go through the whole process again as she grows, Mr and Mrs Tanner have to wait until she is bigger. Alanya now responds to mental stimulation and reacts to colours and movement.

Mrs Tanner says they are hoping to find a way of communicating with her, and a sensory room might provide them with a way of finding the person inside Alanya.

Four more volunteers, including Mrs Tanner, have taken up the slimming challenge. They are also considering a fundraising festival in October. Let's hope they do well.

THE Town and Country Farmers' Market is coming to Amersham on the second Tuesday of each month, starting on Tuesday, July 10, until Tuesday, December 11.

THE Steam-on-the-Green Steam Fair at Sarratt is on Saturday from midday until 4.30pm, and as well as steam engines there will be vintage cars and motor cycles. I believe that the fair is replacing Prestwood Steam Fair which was cancelled this year due to the foot and mouth outbreak.

AMERSHAM Carnival this year is on Saturday, July 14, and once again we will be entertaining guests from our twin town of Bensheim in Germany. The visitors arrive on Thursday, July 12 and return home on Tuesday, July 17.

On Carnival Day the Amersham-Bensheim Society will be running a wine bar and a tombola on King George V Field. Come and join us for a glass of the delicious Bensheim wine.

New members are needed to join the twinning society and to help us celebrate our silver jubilee next year. Twenty-five years of twinning has resulted in many happy and lasting friendships between the people of Amersham and Bensheim, and we hope this wonderful bond will continue for many years to come.

LOOKING ahead a little bit to Friday, July 27, the Chiltern Friends of the Endeavour, which supports the Endeavour Centre for adults with learning difficulties, will be holding an evening car boot sale at Hazledene Farm, Ashridge Road, Chesham, from 5pm till late.

A boot sale will be in aid of the charity, and between £12,000 and £15,000 is needed to build a sensory garden at the Endeavour Centre. Tables can be set up at 4pm and the price is £6 per table in advance or £8 on the gate. Tradesmen will be welcome, but only by prior arrangement. The cost of admission to buyers will be 30p. If anyone would like to make donations to the Endeavour charity stall of bric-a-brac, books and other saleable items they would be most welcome. For further details please contact Mr D Baker or Mrs Baker on 01494 776188.

LASTLY, don't forget the Open Day at the Amersham Crematorium on Sunday. I mentioned this a couple of weeks ago, but got the wrong date. It is definitely on July 8, and will be from 2pm until 5pm, when plans for the new Chapel of Remembrance will be on display, and staff will be happy to answer any queries anyone might have.

This may sound a morbid thing to finish up with, but I am told that it has been a very successful event for the past two or three years.
