My platoon was billeted in Hall Place when we were with Army Ordnance, and I believe we were the first British troops to take over from the GIs. We were all in our teens, 18s to 19s, our eldest being our CO Hall Place could be very eerie. There was a bell in the tower, and sometimes we heard the toll of the bell. We took turns to find the culprit, but never did. In the Great Hall, the fireplace had a secret passage. The lower hallways had stone floors and sometimes one could hear footsteps, but no-one could be seen. I would love to go back.
