FALMOUTH Hockey Club's ladies' first team, newly promoted to the South Division from Trelawney Division I, look set to kick off the new season in style.

Last weekend they reached the final of Essanian's pre-season seven-a-side tournament in Liskeard, only to lose out to Newquay in a hard-fought climax that saw goals from Fay Robinson and skipper Clare Hudson.

At the weekend the ladies competed in an 11-a-side tournament at Truro High School, beating Penzance and Truro. The team demonstrated some fine attacking play from sisters Amy and Rachael Tatlow on the forward line, and impressive defensive work from seasoned-Falmouth player, Danielle Burnford and new signing, Michelle Hares.

The veteran of the side, Fi Rundle, showed her flexibility by switching seamlessly from her favoured right-wing position to the left wing to add to her goal tally, while Tamsin Ryall, who has returned to the club after four years away, provided strength and creativity in midfield.

Falmouth went down 3-1 to Liskeard-based Essanians, but showed much potential to be excited about in the coming months.

"We have built a strong squad this season following our promotion last year and have a really good mix of experience and youth," explained captain, Clare Hudson. "These two pre-season tournaments have provided a great opportunity to fine tune our formation, and with all the girls carrying out weekly fitness training the new season promises much."
