WORCESTERSHIRE construction company Thomas Vale, of Stourport-on-Severn, has shared a major industry partnership award.

The firm is part of the Birmingham Construction Partnership, which has picked up a prestigious Contract Journal construction industry award for long-term partnership. Judges commended the partnership for its innovation, the way it improved the processes involved in the work, and its outstanding teamwork.

The partnership, which was created in 2003 and also includes the Birmingham Construction Partnership led by Birmingham City Council's urban design department, GF Tomlinson Birmingham Ltd and the Wates Group, beat off stiff competition to win.

The prize celebrates long-term arrangements designed to improve construction performance, corporate social responsibility and deliver better value for money for the community.

Tony Hyde, managing director of Thomas Vale, said: "The partnership has been a great success, and the award is a fantastic recognition of all our hard work.

"The success has centred on the ability of all of us involved to work cohesively with each other in an open and trusting environment.

"The open book policy we have removes the chances of disputes and ensures the most efficient contractor for the job in-hand.

"As a local contractor it is fundamental for us that local jobs are created for local people, along with training for people in Birmingham. The partnership is helping making this happen with more than 70 local, young trainees currently on site."

Steve Vickers, general manager of urban design at Birmingham City Council, said: "We are delighted to win the award, and feel it further proves our success in the partnership. It is now in its third year and has delivered many real and measurable benefits in its history.

"The work performed by the partnership has had a direct effect on people, allowing us to save money on tendering, and work with contractors who understand the local community's needs and daily challenges.

"The majority of the work performed by the partnership has been focused on bringing the homes in and around the area up to a decent standard, and has allowed us to deliver a better product to the communities we serve."
