READERS have revealed a legendary goalkeeper who was knocked out during an FA Cup Final and played on with a broken neck was one of the stars at a match in Northwich.

German Bert Trautmann took part in a game at Northwich Victoria's old Drill Field ground. A photograph taken at the match appeared in the October 11 edition of Market Place.

Sandbach man Arthur Lea, of Fields Drive, lent the black-and-white photograph to the Guardian in the hope readers might be able to help him find out more about the picture.

And thanks to a flurry of responses from Guardian readers, it was not long before 78-year-old Arthur's wish was granted.

George Burrows, from Greenbank, was at the photographed match. The 70-year-old said: "It was a midweek match and it was Vics versus an all star squad.

"It was a lovely time and people were running onto the pitch for autographs after the match."

Hartford resident Clive Penny said: "A combined Vics/Albion XI played Harry Ware's League Stars at the Drill Field on May 13,1950, in aid of the Northwich Victory Memorial Hall fund.

"The League Stars included Joe Mercer, the England and Arsenal captain and later manager of Manchester City, Roy Clarke, who later managed Northwich Victoria for a short period, and Bert Trautmann, the German goalkeeper also of Manchester City.

"The result was 6-1 to the League Stars."

Mr Penny remembers a key point in the game, adding: "Trautmann saved a penalty from Arthur Bateman to my own and 8,000 other people's amazement. Arthur Bateman was the Vics penalty king. He never missed them."
