Town Hall to be regenerated

Plans have been finalised to restore a historic town hall and provide more than 100 new homes.

Haringey Council's planning committee is set to give the go-ahead to demolish parts of Tottenham Town Hall tomorrow evening.

Under plans put forward to the committee, Newlon Housing Trust along with the council will build 109 new affordable homes on the site, which includes the Clyde Road depot behind the hall.

Extensions to the building, which were built in the 1930s, are to be demolished to make way for the block of flats.

The scheme will also refurbish the 102-year-old grade II listed town hall and add new business nits, meetings rooms and a courtyard adjoining the neighbouring Bernie Grant arts centre.

Cabinet member for resources, Councillor Charles Adje, said: "This development is another important step forward in bringing new life to south Tottenham as well as preserving our heritage.

"It also provides a boost for our capital programmes. I am delighted we are now going ahead."

Contracts between the council and the Newlon Group were exchanged before Christmas and an approval is needed by tomorrow's planning committee to start a public consultation.

Mike Hinch, Newlon Group chief executive said: "I am really excited that this landmark part of the borough's heritage has been preserved and that we will be able to provide a mix of affordable homes for local people."

A planning application can be viewed on the council's website.
