August is here and the summer holidays are well under way.
It’s a chance for children to have fun and spend time on some of the less academic activities that aren’t always given top priority at school.
But if you haven’t yet got anything planned, there’s still plenty of time to book a place on one of the many holiday courses taking place in the borough.
From Tuesday until August 8, Lauderdale House is offering children aged three to five the chance to take part in a story-making course using drama, dance and props, costing £42 (concessions £20).
During the same week their older brothers or sisters (aged five to nine) can take part in a week of improvised drama and music, creating their own epic castle adventure with dragons, dungeons, magical towers, knights in armour and feisty princesses, costing £62 (concessions £30).
The following week there will be drawing and painting sessions for five to seven-year-olds, with a professional artist guiding children in their artistic efforts. The cost is £62 (concessions £30).
All the courses take place in Highgate Hill, Waterlow Park, Highgate. For more information, call 020 8348 8716.
In addition to courses, children aged five to 12 and their parents can explore the lakeside walks and meandering woodland paths of Kenwood House, in Hampstead Lane, Hampstead, by taking part in The Great Kenwood Trail.
Taking place every day from today until August 31, from 11am to 4pm, there will be three different trails running in different weeks on the themes of fairies, butterflies or highwaymen. The walks costs £1 per child, adults free. Entry to the house and grounds is free. For more information, call 020 8348 1286.
Haringey Council is putting on a huge programme of activities for young people under the banner Summer Fun, including arts and crafts, drama, swimming, and more.
There will also be ‘turn up and play’ table tennis sessions for those aged eight and over at Tottenham Green Leisure Centre, in Philip Lane, Tottenham, daily from Saturday until August 15, from 12pm to 3pm, costing £1 to £2. For more information, call 020 8489 5322.
For children aged three to 13, Bruce Castle Museum, in Lordship Lane, Tottenham, is holding some unusual events. Children can learn all about bees on August 15, including observing real bees and trying on beekeepers’ protective clothing.
The day before, they can also use the museum’s collection of animal bones to find out the difference between carnivores and herbivores, and learn about the history of herbs. There will be the chance to make a scented pomander to take home on August 20, and see hawks, eagles, falcons and owls in a falconry display on August 21. All activities are free. For more information, call 020 8808 8772.
For teenagers, youth charity Exposure will run free graphic design sessions at the Muswell Hill Centre, in Hillfield Park, daily from Sunday until August 31, but participants must sign up in advance.
For information, call 020 8883 0260.
On weekdays from now until August 29 there will be drumming workshops at the Harringay Club, Tottenham Lane, Crouch End, for ages 13 to 18, costing £49 for a week. Call 020 8340 6088 for more information.
There are also activities being put on as part of a London-wide Summer Uni initiative, targeting 13- to 19-year-olds. Teenagers can get an insight into hairdressing, catering, games development and documentary making.
