In 1977 a small house in Green Street, Enfield made newspaper headlines worldwide when it became the source of an unexplained supernatural phenomena.

The strange events that occured in the home of the Hodgsons family became the most documented paranormal event ever recorded in the UK with 30 eyewitnesses.

Now the terrifying story is being brought to the screen in a new three-part drama The Enfield Haunting starring Timothy Spall, Juliet Stevenson, Matthew Macfadyen and Olivier Award-winning actress Eleanor Worthington-Cox in the lead role of 11-year-old Janet Hodgson.

She was captured on film being lifted off the floor and talking in what was said to be the voice of the poltergeist. Those who went to investigate the reports saw chairs move across the floor apparently of their own accord and were hit in the face by objects.

The drama follows the efforts of the most dedicated investigators- two members of the Society for Psychical Research - Maurice Grosse, played by Spall, and Guy Lyon Playfair, played by McFadden, who went onto write a book This House Is Haunted, upon which the show is based.

They are joined in their efforts by Grosse's wife Betty, played by Juliet Stevenson.

Spall originally turned down the role because it "frightened the life out of me" and has admitted he was worried about being haunted himself.

In a trailer for the show he says: "It isn't just a horror story. What makes it frightening is how normal it is."

The Enfield Haunting airs on Sky Living from May 3.
