Every year more than 10,000 people apply to be part of the Open Mic UK competition, the biggest search for unsigned acts in the UK, but just 25 make it to the National Grand Final.

This year talented young Enfield singer Havva Rebke is one of those chosen to battle it out at the NEC in Birmingham on January 24 to be crowned the overall winner. Previous winners have included Jaymi Hensley from Union J and Jahmene Douglas from X Factor.

We caught up with the 20-year-old, who was born in Chase Farm Hospital and works in a shop in Waltham Cross, to find out why she thinks she should scoop the top prize of £5,000 cash and help to launch her career.

When did you start performing and what inspired you?

I’ve been performing since the age of 12 when I used to go to Bodens Performing Arts College and I’ve always loved acting and singing. My dad inspired me to start singing as he is a famous singer in Turkey and has been singing for 30 years, so I have been brought up to love music.

Have you entered a competition before?

In 2012 I entered the X Factor and fortunately got in front of the judges, and got through to bootcamp where I was then put into a mixed group, which unfortunately didn’t work out. I also suffered with bad nerves at this stage of my life, so getting through to the final of Open Mic has really boosted my confidence.

Best moment of Open Mic so far?

Performing at the area finals. Nerves have always held me back in the past, so singing well and getting through to the grand finals is a massive achievement for me.

How do you feel about getting into the final?

I am so thrilled to be in the grand final! Its a big opportunity, with A&Rs and management scouting. I have a lot to prove so hopefully all goes well.

What will you sing?

I’m hoping to be singing my own acoustic version of Sia – Chandelier.

What is your dream?

To be a successful singer, writing songs, being in the studio and to tour the world.

Who do you admire in the industry?

Ed Sheeran, I love his songwriting, guitar and performance skills. He is amazing. I also admire Taylor Swift, Sam Smith, Bruno Mars and Adele.
