Concerns have been raised by members of the community over the running of a youth centre by Haringey Borough Council.

The group say they have found the Bruce Grove Youth Centre closed on a number of occasions despite claims from the council the youth centre would be open four nights a week.

According to the group, the centre was closed on 18 separate occasions after they made random visits during a four week period in September and October.

Dave Morris Secretary of Haringey Federation of Residents Associations said: “Haringey’s young people are entitled to attractive facilities, what is needed is not cuts, but a huge expansion in youth services and centres.”

Seema Chandwani, from Tottenham, said: “This Youth Centre is in the centre of the riot zone, an area where many young people face an array of social issues.

“Other London local authorities, facing similar budget constraints, are somehow finding ways to maintain or even open new Youth Centres.

“It’s a shame that, despite all the rhetoric, glossy reports and Tube station posters since the riots, our local authority has yet to fulfil its pledge to young people.”

Last year the council reduced the number of hours it would be open due to cuts from central government.

However earlier this year the council announced it would be opening the youth centre for more hours during the week as part of the authority’s “12 in 2012” pledges for Tottenham.

Parent Sharon Sampson from Tottenham said: “It’s worrying that the Council is making these claims while no evidence exists for this to be true, not even on its own website.

“Clearly some probing questions need to be asked as it appears young people, the community and even our elected members are being misled.”

Andreas Koumi manager of youth media charity Exposure said: "After all the cuts, which decimated young people's services locally and caused so much dismay, there is a need for honesty, integrity and transparency to help restore confidence."

A council spokesperson said: “Bruce Grove Youth Centre was open for a range of activities throughout the summer as part of the council’s summer fun programme for young people.

“The centre currently hosts activities on Monday to Wednesday evenings, including sessions with our young commissioners, martial arts, and an open girls’ group.

“In addition the Unity radio station runs from the Centre. We are currently reviewing future provision from the centre.”
