The founder of a  chain of care homes has won an award for his contribution to the Asian community in Britain.

Ravi Gidar, who set up care provider Gold Care Homes, was named Asian of the Year 2012 during an awards ceremony in central London on Monday.

His company now runs 23 nursing and residential homes across the UK, including Peregrine House in Hermitage Road in South Tottenham.

Mr Gidar, who moved to the UK in 1966 with his parents from India, said: “This award is not for myself but for the whole Asian community. I have only given my time and experience but others give so much more.

"There are many people who are deserving of this award but I am humbled to have received this honour."

Mr Gidar was also recognised for his support for charities including Crimestoppers and Great Ormond Street Hospital.
