Liberal Democrats launch petition calling for changes to parking policy in Haringey
3:40pm Friday 4th January 2013 in News By Bruce Thain
A petition has been launched calling for 30 minutes' free parking to help hard-pressed shops in the borough.
The campaign has been organised by Liberal Democrat councillors, who argue a change in parking policy will help encourage more people to shop in the borough’s high streets.
Organisers say traders are under extreme pressure and Haringey Borough Council should be doing more to help high streets thrive.
The renewed call for change comes after Muswell Hill shopkeeper Chris Ostwald started a petition last year, which received more than 5,000 signatures.
Traders have argued the council’s parking policy, in which shoppers have to pay as much as £3-per-hour, is hurting business for shops and are calling for the 30 minutes free parking.

Research shows other factors are much more important, while bus travellers and pedestrians spend more per week and month than car drivers, and fewer restrictions on parking can actually mean reduced sales.
