Politicians have warned that urgent work is needed to restore community centres in Haringey, with £14million investment needed to bring them up to a reasonable standard.

Opposition Liberal Democrat councillors have hit out at Haringey Borough Council, claiming the authority has neglected its community buildings and raising fears some may be sold.

Council figures show just four in 24 of the council-owned community centres are listed as being in a good condition and £14.5million is needed to maintain them.

The council also estimates £3million would be needed to carry out urgent and essential maintenance needed immediately.

Lib Dem councillor Nigel Scott spokesperson for communities, said: “This problem would never have happened if Haringey Council had done things properly. Haringey needs to take much better care and look after its buildings.

“Community centres are at the heart of local activities and help to keep people together as a community. In difficult times the last thing we need is the sale of these buildings.”

A review of community buildings will be carried out by the council over the next five months to look at policy regarding the use of space by the borough’s voluntary and community services.

In response, Councillor Joe Goldberg, said: “The community buildings strategy aims to improve and protect the community offer and make the best use of council community buildings in the borough – through improving their quality, widening access to buildings and identifying regeneration opportunities where appropriate."
