Hundreds sign petition for 30 minutes' free parking in Haringey

Hundreds sign parking petition Hundreds sign parking petition

Nearly 400 people have signed a petition calling for 30 minutes' free parking to help traders in the borough’s shopping streets.

The petition, organised by Liberal Democrat councillors, was launched last month and has received 399 signatures in support calling for a change to Haringey Borough Council’s parking policy, with a further 105 people 'liking' the campaign on Facebook.

Lib Dem councillor Jim Jenks, who represents Muswell Hill, said: “The council must do more to support local businesses.

“Independent traders are struggling and 30 minutes of free parking would encourage more people to shop on our high streets and boost local trade.”

The petition comes after traders in Muswell Hill campaigned against parking policy charges, which were increased by the council last year from £1.40 to £3 per hour.

At one time we heard that Haringey Council had done their own survey on this issue, which we have heard nothing about yet. Meanwhile, more and more people are signing the petition, while the Council before Christmas might have hoped the whole thing would fizzle out. It's surely time now for them to come up with an answer instead of trying some other manoeuvre.
