Warning issued after spate of catalytic converter thefts in Tottenham

Police are warning owners of vans and 4X4s to be vigilant after eight vehicles had their catalytic converters stolen in one night.

On the night of Wednesday January 16, eight Mercedes Sprinter vans in Tottenham had their converters stolen.

Since the beginning of the year,16 vans have been targeted with thieves taking the converters for their scrap metal value.

Police believe vans are being targeted because of the ground clearance, making the exhaust system of the vehicle more accessible to thieves.

Officers are calling on drivers of 4x4s and vans to be vigilant and to consider having their vehicle marked or to have bolts on their catalytic converter welded shut to prevent thieves from removing them.

Anyone with information about the thefts during the past month should get in contact with police.
