A decision on whether there will be Judicial Review into Haringey Borough Council’s changes to council tax benefit will be made today or tomorrow.

Solicitors representing an unnamed Haringey resident yesterday launched a legal challenge against the council at the High Court.

A Judicial Review is being sought by lawyers at Irwin Mitchell, which claims the council did not conduct a proper consultation over the authority’s council tax reduction scheme.

In the scheme, scheduled to come into force in April, all households of working age who have previously not paid council tax will have to pay 20 per cent towards their council tax bill.

The changes come after government announced it would be abolishing the current benefit from April 1 and cutting the allowance it gives to local authorities by ten per cent.

All councils in the country have been given control of the benefit and have to come up with their own schemes.

The law firm has also launched Legal challenges against other councils including Birmingham, Hackney, Rochdale and Sheffield and other councils are being investigated.
