Haringey Borough Council welcomes Judge’s decision on council tax challenge

Haringey Borough Council has welcomed the ruling of a High Court Judge today on its changes to council tax benefit.

Earlier today Justice Underhill ruled against solicitors representing a woman from Haringey. Her lawyers claimed the council had not carried out a proper consultation of its council tax reduction scheme.

A spokeswoman for the council said: “We welcome the ruling of the court, and the finding that our consultation process was fair and lawful.

“We hope that the localised council tax reduction scheme agreed by Full Council last month will now be introduced from the start of the financial year.”

Under the council’s plans all households of working age who have previously not paid council tax will have to pay 20 per cent towards their council tax bill.
