Haringey allotment rents to be frozen for next year says council

Haringey Borough Council has announced allotment rents will be frozen next year.

Last week the Haringey Independent reported the council was planning to double the rents for allotments leading to anger from plot holders.

But Councillor Nilgun Canver cabinet member for environment has written to allotment site secretaries to announce the prices for 2013/2014 will remain the same.

In the letter she said: “Having listened carefully to people’s concerns and reviewing all the feedback we have decided to freeze the charges.”

She added the council still wants to develop an improvement plan for the allotments and officers from the authority will be working on plans to share with holders later this year.

There are currently 27 allotment sites in the borough and several site secretaries had raised concerns about the possible increase, saying it could push people off their plots.

What a nonsense. Why shouldn't these people pay a fair rate? Most of the allotments near me are an eyesore anyway.
