A man has died in a flat fire above a betting shop in Wood Green.

The Fire Brigade were called to the second floor flat above Ladbrokes, in High Road, Wood Green, at 7.36pm last night.

Six engines and 35 firefighters attended the blaze and found the body of a man at the scene.

Police closed the road from Turnpike Lane Station to the Mall shopping centre as crews from Hornsey, Tottenham and Holloway tackled the fire, which was brought under control by 9.18pm.

The cause of the blaze is not known at this stage and firefighters will revisit the scene later today to assess the structure of the building.
