  • "How disgusting. Is there not a way they can stop the auction from going ahead? Criminal damage to a building for one thing! I know Banksy is a grafitti artist, (and therefore his work is actually illegal too), but to rob work by a 'criminal' is really very low.."

A piece of Banksy street art has been removed and put on an auction website to be sold for more than $500,000.

The image appeared overnight on the side of a Poundland, in Whymark Avenue, Turnpike Lane in May last year and showed a child labourer making Union Jack bunting.

People noticed work around the building last week and the image has now appeared on the US Fine Art Auctions Miami website with a starting price of $400,000, equivalent to more than £250,000.

There has been anger across social media, on community web forums and even from the Haringey Trade Unions Council at the discovery.

TUC Secretary Keith Flett said: “People in the area were proud of the Banksy and many were in sympathy with the point it made.

“Works of art like this should not be sold off for private profit as it appears is happening.”

Poundland announced on the firm's Twitter feed: “We would like to confirm that we are NOT responsible for either selling or removing the Banksy mural. We are currently investigating.”
