Tottenham Hotspur recruit extra security ahead of Inter Milan Europa League match

Spurs are moving to protect fans from further attacks before their next European away match.

The news comes days after three Tottenham Hotspur supporters were taken to hospital following an attack in a pub in Lyon before the team's Europa League tie with Olympique Lyonnais.

Up to 150 Spurs fans were attacked in a pub last Wednesday by a group of between 20 and 25 masked men.

 

Witnesses said some attackers were making Nazi salutes when they started to smash doors and throw chairs into the bar.

The attack was the second this season. In November, two Spurs fans were stabbed when a gang of up to 50 'Ultras' ambushed a pub in Rome ahead of the Europa League match against Lazio.

Both attacks were seen as anti-Semitic due to the club's high numbers of Jewish fans.

Spurs confirmed today that the club will appoint a security officer for the match against Inter Milan at the San Siro stadium on Thursday, March 7. 

The club will also hold discussions with Inter Milan, the Foreign Office and UEFA about providing police protection the night before the match.

It will also ensure Metropolitan Police work with police in Italy to discuss fans’ safety ahead of the tie.
