Fire destroys flat in West Green Road Tottenham
11:13am Monday 4th March 2013 in News By Bruce Thain
Three people escaped harm in a fire which tore through a first floor flat last night.
The Fire Brigade were called to the first floor flat in West Green Road, Tottenham at 9.47pm, with more than 30 firefighters and six engines tackling the blaze.
A woman and two men escaped from the flat before crews arrived.
The woman and one man were guided out of the building by 999 control officers on the phone and the other man was able to escape after a passer-by broke a window.
Fifteen people were evacuated from homes nearby as a precaution but crews managed to control the blaze and stop it from spreading to other buildings.
Station manager Glen Gorman, who was at the scene, said: “When firefighters arrived they were faced with a serious fire in a flat engulfing the whole of the ground floor and more than half of the first.
“Thirty firefighters battled against thick, acrid smoke and intense heat and flames to control the fire and prevent it spreading to adjoining maisonettes.”
Crews managed to bring the fire under control by 11.37pm. The cause is still under investigation.
