A councillor has contested community campaigner's claims about spending on youth services saying there has been a cut to budgets, not an increase.

Councillor Joe Goldberg was speaking at a meeting of Haringey Borough Council’s children and young people's scrutiny panel this evening.

The comments come following a community report, called Misspent Youth, which claims there had been an apparent increase in the council’s budget.

The report says the current youth service budget is £2.1m, compared to £1.8m in 2010, despite the council announcing a cut to services of 75 per cent in 2011.

In response, councillor Goldberg told panel members there was a cut in 2010 and that it was not possible to make a like-for-like comparison of the two budgets.

He also pointed out the cabinet had allocated an additional £1.2million in June 2012 to fund specific areas of the council’s Youth Strategy 2011 to 2014.
