An animal shelter says five kittens dumped in a cardboard box in a pile of rubbish are lucky to have survived.

The four-week-old kittens were found in the box by a member of the public in the Peabody Estate off Lordship Lane, Wood Green.

They were taken to Wood Green Animal Shelter on Friday last week and have been in constant care since.

Manager of the shelter Katie Wickins said: “These kittens were quite literally left out for the rubbish.

“It was lucky they were found as they wouldn’t have survived being so young and away from their mum.

“They are in a reasonably good condition and appear to be well fed.”

The black and tabby kittens will be looked after for the next month until they are eight-weeks-old and are big enough to be homed.
