Councillor Nilgun Canver ordered to attend Wood Green Crown Court
A former member of Haringey Borough Council’s cabinet who was charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice has been ordered to appear at crown court.
Councillor Nilgun Canver, the former holder of the Environment portfolio, appeared at Highbury Corner Magistrates Court this afternoon.
While there she was granted unconditional bail and was ordered to attend Wood Green Crown Court on August 28 for a plea hearing.
No details of the offence were revealed in court today and Cllr Canver, of Mattison Road, Harringay, gave no indication of how she was going to plea.
The morning it was announced that she has been summoned to court and had stepped down from her cabinet position with immediate effect.
A council spokesman said she had been replaced by the Cllr John Bevan, formerly the cabinet member for housing, and that a new cabinet member for housing will be announced shortly.
The authority refused to comment further at this stage as the matter was “personal and private”.
Liberal Democrat councillor Richard Wilson claimed the alleged offence was very serious and the loss of Cllr Canver would cause a great deal of uncertainty about the direction of key services.
