In August, a politician resigned from her cabinet position after it was revealed she had been charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Labour councillor Nilgun Canver stepped down as Haringey Borough Council’s cabinet member for the environment after she was ordered to appear at Highbury Magistrates Court.

She was replaced by Cllr John Bevan, formerly the portfolio holder for housing.

Meanwhile, two men were shot in the Broadwater Farm Estate in Tottenham after a community event to celebrate the life of Mark Duggan, whose shooting by police officers on August 4, 2011, sparked riots across London and the rest of the country.

Also in August, Haringey Council passed a by-law which limits the number of “chuggers” on Haringey’s high streets after concerns were raised about harassment.

It covers the main shopping areas in Crouch End, High Road in Wood Green and Muswell Hill Broadway.

The measure limits fundraisers to operating in very specific locations, only lets them work on specific days and specifies how many chuggers can work at the same time.

Finally, the owners of a tortoise that went missing for five days thanked neighbours for coming together to help find their much loved pet.

Rosie Jenkins and Lee Northman were distraught after their pet leopard tortoise, Mr T, went missing from their friend’s garden in Wood Green.

The couple organised a search to help find the seven-year-old reptile, who normally lives at their home in Tottenham with his companion, Mrs T.
