The MP for Hornsey and Wood Green visited a school to help raise awareness of homelessness.

Lynne Featherstone spoke to Year 11 students at Grieg City Academy, in Hornsey High Street, about rough sleepers as part of their citizenship project.

The Liberal Democrat MP was joined by a volunteer from Haringey Winter Shelter, which provides emergency accommodation for the borough’s homeless.

Students also discussed the problems which face young people who become homeless and the help that is available to them.

Ms Featherstone said: “I was very glad to see young students tackling the subject of homelessness.

“The issue should be on the agenda – not pushed to one side and forgotten.”

According to the Lib Dem MP the coalition government has invested more than £470 million to tackle homelessness, with the bulk of this being spent on homeless prevention funding.

She added that £3.5million had also been used to extend the London’s No Second Night Out programme, which houses the homeless, to new areas.
