A soup kitchen has worked with the Romanian Embassy to help migrants from the eastern European nation find work.

The Muswell Hill Soup Kitchen, in Dukes Avenue, is liaising with London’s Romanian community to act as an unofficial ‘job centre’.

Migrant workers from Romania can go to the soup kitchen on Sunday evenings and receive a warm meal while speaking to prospective employers, normally Romanians themselves.

Martin Stone, who runs the soup kitchen, praised the Romanian community for coming together to help each other out.

He said: “I’m very proud of how active the community are and how willing they are to help other Romanians.

“I think they set a really good example for other communities and I hope the programme keeps going.”

The initiative started on Sunday, January 12, and the Romanian Embassy thanked the soup kitchen for its help.

In a statement an embassy spokesman said: “We highly value his dedication to support and advice on homelessness prevention offered to people in need.

“Such an initiative is very much welcomed since all the services offered are aimed to deal with different cases of vulnerabilities associated with the status of migrant worker.

“In their overwhelming majority, Romanians living in the UK are hard-working people, valued for their work ethic and skills.”
