Haringey Liberal Democrats launch petition to cut council tax for special constables
Special constables who give up their time to fight crime could see their council tax bills halved, if a campaign is successful.
Haringey Borough Council’s Liberal Democrat group has launched a petition to encourage the authority to reward the constables by giving them a 50 per cent discount on their bills.
They say this will reward existing special constables, as well as encourage other residents to volunteer and help the police fight crime.
The incentive has been successfully implemented in other councils across the UK and Haringey Borough Council will make a decision on whether to adopt the Liberal Democrat proposal this month.
Special constables have the same powers and responsibilities as regular police officers, and spend up to 16 hours a month volunteering with the police without pay, to make the community safer.
