Haringey’s Liberal Democrats claimed a victory for residents after a camera was installed in a Harringay street to stop it being used as a “rat run”.

Campaigners called for the camera to be installed in Wightman Road after people complained of noise and disruption by lorries and other heavy goods vehicles using the roads, despite a weight restriction.

Harringay Lib Dem councillor Karen Alexander was one of the first to raise the issue with Haringey Borough Council in 2009.

She said: “Residents have been telling us for a long time about the issues with HGVs illegally using Wightman and the Harringay ladder roads.

“After a long campaign by the Lib Dems, working with local residents and residents association groups, the council are finally installing a static camera on Wightman Road to enforce the weight limit ban.”

Lib Dem campaigner Asha Kaur said: “This is good news, if we can reduce the amount of HGV traffic on Wightman Road then I am convinced it will reduce it on the ladder roads too.”

The authority said it has been working with residents and its traffic teams and it aims to install he camera by March 17.
