A 16-year-old has been selected to fly the British flag at a gathering of scouts from around the world.

Amy Garrad, from Wood Green, will be one of 36 Haringey scouts chosen from 120 applicants to represent Britain at the 23rd World Scout Jamboree in Japan in 2015.

Amy is a member of Wild Wolf Explorer Scout Unit in Bounds Green and will be among 2,400 British scouts and guides taking part in the jamboree at Kirara-hama, in south west Japan, from July 28 to August 8, 2015.

More than 30,000 scouts and guides aged 14 to 17 from around the world will attend the ten-day event.

Jamborees are held every four years, and are occasions when young people practice and celebrate scouting, build cross-cultural friendships and learn new skills.

The theme of next year’s jamboree is ‘A Spirit of Unity’ and it will coincide with the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, with the Kirara-hama site situated between the two cities.

Between now and 2015 Amy and the other Haringey scouts selected for the jamboree, will work as a team to raise funds for the trip.

Chief Scout Bear Grylls said: “Congratulations to Amy Garrad and all the other young people who have been selected to represent their communities at the World Scout Jamboree in Japan in 2015.

“Over the course of the jamboree these young people will be able to meet people from around the world, take part in amazing adventures and experiences and be challenged to think about global issues in a new light.

“I wish them all the best and I know they are going to have an amazing time over the 18 months in the run-up to the event."
