Haringey’s Liberal Democrats have warned voters to be sceptical about a four-year council tax freeze announced by the ruling Labour group today.

Labour declared it would not be increasing council tax until at least 2018 under its plans to support struggling families.

The proposal is due to be ratified at a full council meeting tonight but the opposition Lib Dems have welcomed the news with hesitation.

Lib Dem group leader Councillor Richard Wilson said: "We welcome this admission from Labour that, after 40 years of running Haringey, the council tax is too high. Local residents are fed up with paying one of the highest rates of council tax in London, whilst receiving poor services.

"However, residents will be very sceptical about this pre-election announcement given Labour's past record on raising council tax year on year.

“Council tax bills in Haringey went up every year but one under the last Labour Government, addeing a hefty £474.34 to the average Band D council tax bill. This increases left Haringey with the fifth highest council tax in London.

"The Liberal Democrats have campaigned for a council tax freeze for many years. And since 2010, the Lib Dems in government have helped fund the council tax freeze, giving Haringey Council millions of pounds in extra funding to keep council tax down.”
