A scheme to boost sports participation, health and fitness for people in Haringey has celebrated its first anniversary.

Tottenham Hotspur Foundation and National Grid marked a year of support for Park View Rangers Football Club with a five-a-side football game.

The game saw National Grid staff defeat parents and staff from the club 4-3.

The energise project, a joint-run initiative which runs until April, has provided 450 hours of coaching to the club and enabled the club’s coaches to gain additional qualifications to increase local football participation.

Paul Keenan, chairman of Park View Rangers Football Club on Crowland Road, has seen a marked difference from the National Grid funding and the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation’s expert coaching.

He said: “The energise programme was an outstanding success, giving Park View Rangers Football Club a major boost. We hope the club can progress and build on the experience.

“Our coaches have benefited greatly working with the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation coaches and all the players have improved beyond all expectations.

Our two recently qualified Level 1 coaches are grateful to National Grid for funding their course, supporting the future of the club.”

Other initiatives in Haringey have been aimed at improving fitness for the elderly and disabled. Bridge to Healthy Living encourages people to lead healthy lifestyles, and the motor activity training programme provides sport and activity sessions for those with learning and or physical disabilities.

National Grid’s London power tunnels construction site in Eade Road, Haringey, is due to be completed in 2018 to provide underground electric power across the capital.

David Luetchford, National Grid’s head of cable tunnels, said: “It’s our job to connect people to the energy they use, which we do with projects like London power tunnels. However, it’s also very important to us to connect on a personal level with the communities where we work.

“National Grid is delighted that we’ve been able to support the community through the energise project and to help boost the great work of the Park View Rangers Football Club along with Bridge to Healthy Living and the Motor Activity Training programmes.”
