Tottenham Hotspur has expressed its “heartfelt condolences” following the sudden death of a leading member of the club’s supporters’ trust.

Darren Alexander, joint-chairman of the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters Trust (THST), died in hospital on Friday, March 7.

Mr Alexander attended his first Spurs game in the 1970s and was a long-standing member of the trust.

He was appointed as a board member in 2004 and was later named THST joint-chairman in 2013.

In a statement on the club’s website, a spokesman said: “A season ticket holder since 1989, Darren was an extremely passionate member of the club's fanbase and a regular attendee of both home and away games, as well as on our European travels.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to all his family and friends.”

The news of Mr Alexander’s death was confirmed on Twitter in a message from the THST account on Friday.

It said: “It is with great sadness that the board of THST confirms the passing of joint-chairman, Darren Alexander, in hospital earlier today.”

Spurs fans took to the social media site to express their grief.

Emma Poulton said: “Shocked and saddened by this news. One of the good guys. In deepest sympathy with his family and friends. RIP.”

Melanie Cooke said: “Tragic news, a great loss to all those who knew Darren including the fans who benefited from his tireless work. RIP.”
