Tottenham Hotspur Supporters Trust said the sudden passing of one of its most prominent campaigners was a “great loss” for all Spurs fans.

Darren Alexander, joint-chairman of the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters Trust (THST), passed away in hospital on Friday at the age of 42.

Katriana Law, the THST secretary, said the trust is still awaiting results of a post-mortem as it is unclear what caused Mr Alexander's death.

She said: “He was really ill on Thursday but he didn’t want to go to hospital because he has a phobia of them.

“But as he got worse his parents, who were looking after him, forced him to go to the Princess Royal Hospital, in West Sussex.

“Next thing I knew, I got a call got a call to tell me that they couldn’t restart his heart.”

Mr Alexander attended his first Spurs game in the 1970s and was a long-standing member of the trust.

He was appointed as a board member in 2004 and was later named THST joint-chairman in 2013.

Ms Law said: “He was involved with the supporters’ trust for the better part of a decade.

“Darren firmly believed the game belonged to those who passed through the turnstiles each weekend and often stated that owners, managers and players came and went, with the fans being the only constant.

“He was incredibly warm, very funny and just a fantastic person to work with – he will be greatly missed.”

Mr Alexander’s funeral will take place on Monday at 3.30pm at Eltham Crematorium.

Tottenham posted a statement on their website to express its “heartfelt condolences” to Mr Alexander’s family and friends.

Ms Law praised Spurs for being “fantastic” during this difficult time and said it was thanks to the goodwill Darren had built with the club.

She added: “The trust movement will be poorer for his loss but all those who had the honour of knowing Darren will continue to work as hard as he did and with as much enthusiasm and determination to ensure his legacy is fulfilled.”
