Video footage has emerged of the moment a family car was engulfed in a fireball seconds after a baby and elderly man were pulled from the vehicle.

Flames quickly spread from the engine of the silver Peugeot 307 when it caught fire as it was carrying four people along Craven Park Road, in South Tottenham, on Sunday.

Two worshippers from a nearby synagogue rushed to the aid of a panic-stricken elderly man who had become stuck in the passenger side of the car.

Seconds earlier, a baby had been pulled from a rear bumper seat by the female driver as smoke filled the vehicle and the flames took over, causing a small explosion in the engine.

Orthodox worshipper Yohanan Kupperman told the Jewish News he was acting on instinct when he saw the car pull up with smoke and flames billowing from the engine.

He said: “I was just thinking that had to get him out. I did what I had to do. I’d definitely do it again. He was the last person out and minutes after I helped the man the whole car exploded. ”

Firefighters and the London Ambulance Service were called to the scene at 5.15pm.

No-one was injured in the incident, and the fire took 15 minutes to extinguish, though the car was completely destroyed by the inferno.

A second man, Schlomi Zeivald, a former parachutist in the Israeli Army, also ran out to help, recovering some of the family’s belongings from the car and closing the doors to contain the fire.

He told the Jewish News that he had to cover his face with his clothes to avoid choking on the fumes.

Police say they are not treating the explosion as suspicious, while the London Fire Brigade is not looking any further into the incident.
