Political parties in Haringey came together to campaign against a record number of UKIP candidates being fielded in the borough at this month’s elections.

Members of the Liberal Democrats, Labour and Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition handed out Stand Up to UKIP campaign leaflets in Crouch End, one of the controversial party’s target wards.

UKIP is fielding a record eight candidates across the borough in Bounds Green, Crouch End, Fortis Green, Hornsey, Noel Park, St Ann’s, White Hart Lane and Woodside.

The party has shot to prominence under leader Nigel Farage with its strong controversial views on immigration and the European Union.

TUSC candidate Terry McGrath, of Crouch End Hill, said: “It is seen by most as a far-right populist party which scapegoats immigrants, blaming them for the economic crisis, unemployment and lack of housing. It threatens our multicultural community in Haringey."

Green Party candidate for Alexandra ward, Lucy Craig, accused the party of attempting to “rip up unpleasant feelings in what is a mixed, multicultural borough”.

She said: "Immigrants are not the problem. It's job insecurity, lack of housing and a disillusionment with the mainstream parties.

“We had a good response in Crouch End and, judging from the reaction of people we spoke to, UKIP will find it difficult to get a foot in Haringey.”

The Haringey Independent has attempted to contact Haringey UKIP for a comment.
