Liberal Democrats in Haringey are calling for the resignation of the borough’s mayor after she was found to have used her position for personal gain.

Labour councillor Sheila Peacock sent two letters regarding personal matters on headed council-paper, from her council email address and using her mayoral title.

A standards committee this week concluded she had breached the members’ code of conduct and said her actions brought the office of the mayor into disrepute.

She was officially censured by the committee, but Haringey Liberal Democrat leader Richard Wilson believes the punishment does not go far enough.

He said: “Given the seriousness of the standards committee’s findings it is simply not tenable for Cllr Peacock to remain as Mayor and the Lib Dems are calling on her step aside for the sake of the borough.

“Councillor Peacock is the second Labour councillor to be rebuked by the standards committee this year. Labour has run Haringey Council for more than 40 years and this behaviour is sadly typical of Haringey Labour’s arrogant attitude to power.”

Haringey Labour says it is preparing a statement on the matter, while Mayor Peacock has so far been unavailable for comment.
