Haringey Mayor Sheila Peacock has said she is “deeply sorry” for using her position on the council to try to gain influence in personal matters.

The Northumberland Park councillor was found guilty of breaching the members’ code of conduct by an independent standards committee this week.

Mayor Peacock sent two letters by email regarding personal matters on council headed paper, from her council email address, and signed with her mayoral title.

The standards committee concluded she had attempted to use her position for improper personal advantage and said her actions brought the office of the mayor into disrepute.

She was officially censured by the standards committee, and will receive further training on the use of council resources.

The committee has, however, refused to divulge the subject of the emails that were sent.

The opposition Liberal Democrat group, meanwhile, is calling for her to resign.

Councillor Peacock could not be contacted this morning but she has since released a statement through the Haringey Labour group.

She said: “I know that my conduct on this occasion has fallen short of the high standards I set for myself, which are required of me as a councillor and mayor.

“I recognise I made an error of judgement and I am deeply sorry. I take full responsibility for my actions.

“It was right for the standards committee to review this matter.”
